A speed camera caught me doing a reprehensible 35 mph in a 30mph zone, in heavy following traffic. It appears that I can avoid the 3 penalty points and £60 fine if I attend a
'Speed Awareness Course', BUT the course will cost me £80.

At least Dick Turpin wore a mask.

well you still broke the law!

pay up. 3 points have to be declared for 5 years for insurance purposes. £80 is the least painful way to go.
Would everybody in that speeding heavy traffic have been caught by the speed camera?
So you pay £60 for the course and then £10 per point essentially? Wow, yeah, real robbers aren't they?

We seem to live in a society where people complain even AFTER they admit their guilt. Would you rather the course be free, so that other road users and tax payers can pay to teach you the error of your arrogant ways? I reckon they should charge you twice that, since you're only half as likely to take any notice of what they say.
Thankfully, poor numeracy skills aren't a crime. *phew*
deny it was your car. ask them for photographic evidence it was you. basically make the police earn their £80 by getting them to send you photos, statements etc....they may (and have done in the past) just given up cos they can't be arsed
you broke the law, take your punishment
Why give this person any advice? They haven't disputed that they WERE travelling above the speed limit. It makes no difference if other cars where too. If the other cars ran red lights, it wouldn't make it right for Scylax to have.

It's not about making the police work for their money when a person is admitting their guilt. It's about being a decent human being and not thinking that running over 7 year olds is your god given right as a motorist.
Spot on Mobius.

Presumably Scylax, if someone/ a child/ a dog/ another vehicle stepped or ran or pulled in front of you and you hit them, you'd be one of those who protests that "It wasn't my fault, I couldn't miss them. You can't blame me!"

Just stick to the rules Scylax. That's what they're for.
whilst of course 35 in a 30 is not exactly boy racer crime of the century...and it may seem a very small amount of excess speed...legally you stll broke the rules...there has to be a cut off point somewhere...and number where it stops being ok...they cant just have blurred edges where its ok to speed a bit...
if you had been caught by an officer they may have let it go...but the camera means its logge dinto the computers and they cant just say 'ahh its was only a bit over the limit, lets let him off'...because for all they know, that speed could just be because you couldnt slow down from 60 in time to pass the camera....

you are lucky they offered the course...i did 37 in a 30...had only passed my test a few months earlier and hadnt really got used to driving and speeds etc...and i wish id been offered the course... because had i done it again id have automatically lost my licence...fortuantely i didnt...
If you wre caught at 35, your speedo was probably reading 37 or 38. Bang to rights matey.
I agree with the posts - But you were unlucky I understand there is a tollarance of 10% before a fine/3pts is levied.

I would do the course and chalk it up to experience.
Stop moaning and pay the money, you broke the law!!!!
I was caught doing 36 in a 30 (wifes fault)...went on s.a.c....£90...it was well worth it and I learnt a few things...go for it.

Of course I will go for it, Bright Spark; I pleaded guilty, didn't I ? I just wish I was as guiltless as the majority of the respondents here, who have never, ever, inadvertently gone over the line, and become holier-than-thou thereby.
I assume you are new to the site!!...b.t.w. pleading guilty does not automatically book you on a s.a.c....its up to you to decide...so there was no 'of course' about it.,
no-one here is being holier than thou, and im sure many have inadvertantly gone over the limit...its very easy to do...but we dont all come on here trying to blame other poeple and even accuse the police of some conspiracy to make money...rather than just accept you broke the law and therefore are expected to pay for it...
we have accepted our lot and expect you to do the same...
