Looking for first cheap car any ideas?

Hi im a 17 year old looking for a first car. i obviously need a cheap insurable car and want it to be quite small. can any one help thanks.

Be prepared for a shock when you get your insurance quote. It's almost certainly going to be over £2000 per year (and quite possibly nearer to, or even over £4000). Try adding a more experienced driver, such as a parent, onto your own policy as a named driver. (Doing it that way round is completely legal and can get you a substantial discount. Doing it the other way round - with you as a named driver on someone else's policy for your car - is strictly illegal!).

I passed in April and got a 53 plate ka and i'm more than pleased with it. The insurance cost almost the same as the car though :| fully comp, for the year was £1100 which was my cheapest quote!!

My wife went from a Peugeot 205GTi to a Daewoo Matiz in one fell swoop years ago
( the Peugeot turned her into a road devil racing all the repmobiles!)
Anyway she has now had 2 and they are ideal for what you want. Cheap, comfortable and go well enough.

Go for an oldie! I had a Morris Minor as my first car - it was older than I was. Cheap to run, tax and insure and if I ever left the lights on (regularly) I could start it with the handle.

Josaphine - beware! Minis are very expensive to run and insure! The reason? Young, first-time drivers like you think a Mini will be a cheap lttle runabout. Consequently, Minis (especially owned by youngsters) are a far higher insurance risk and the premiums will reflect that.

Secondly - I've owned three Minis by default (first wife and her daughter both had one and my sister-in-law who gave it to us). All the parts are surprisingly expensive for such as standard little car. In fact, the only reasonable costs to owning a Mini is low fuel consumption.

I really wouldn't recommend you buy a Mini Jo. It will cost you a bomb. Does someone in your family know about cars? What about your Dad? They usually sort cars out for their kids - it's what Dad's are for! Perhaps a VW. I have a 1984 Golf and the insurance is £146 per year (about £2.80 per week). OK - I'm 48 with 30 years driving and a clean licence, but a VW (not a GTi!) may be cheaper for you.

Andyvon..It was my daughter who posted this question, I am a single parent and my daughters father lives 50miles away but he is usless with cars anyway, I have been trying to persuade her away from an austin mini for months, I will get her to look for something else,

If she persists with old-style Mini, she might regret it - a neighbour has one ( R- reg) and it's always needing "attention".
