Road Tax is stupid

I've just paid £233 for 6 months' tax.

I hardly ever use that car.

I can walk into town. I work from home. When I go to London, I frequently use the train.

If I drive at all, I more often take my little car.

I neither pollute the roads, nor put wear and tear on the roads.

Would it work to factor annual mileage into the cost of road tax?

If you don't use the car, why not sell it?
£466 to tax for a year and you don't even drive it.

Oh well...I suppose it's keeping car tax down for the rest of us.
I would say it's more stupid to own a car that is rarely used. What a complete waste of money.
Too complicated to factor annual mileage in to road tax, although your insurance shoul be cheaper if you tell them you drive less than x miles per year.

Well, I have a little, economical runaround, but ... it has a soft roof ...

... so it's damp in Winter, or when it's raining.

And in London, you can't see the traffic around you.

So I have the other car. And road tax is meant to take into account emissions, but I hardly emit anything at all.

That's jolly, jake.
If you do not use the car why not sell it? I think you should do that! Us road users are not called "Wallets on Wheels" for nothing. Alternatively you could organise a raffle where one of us ABers would win your car, and then both our problems would be solved. Good idea, eh?

Why don't you sell both cars and buy a practical one?

You still have a bike don't you?

Morning, JB.

Good idea. But ... I like my car, so I think I'll keep it for now.

I thought the Govt were trying to encourage us to use our cars less !! ... like me.
I've always thought that road tax and insurance should be abolished and the cost lumped in with the price of fuel. This way you only pay for the mileage you do. More efficient cars cost less to run and insurance is underwritten by the government. Easy peasy.
isn't JJ's bike called Thing2?
You could buy one of these and not have to pay road tax either

ummmm ...

A motorbike?

Yes, I do, but I haven't ridden it in ages. I don't like it.

I'd look great turning up at meetings on a bike.

On the telly, you take off your crash helmet, and seductively shake out your hair, like something from a Slivikrin advert.

In real life, you take off your helmet, and your hair is stuck to your head with sweat, and you have dead flies splattered on your nose.
But surely there is an argument to put the road tax onto the cost of fuel? The more you drive the more you're taxed (yes I know that happens anyway because of the fuel duty, but why can't they add, say, another 5p to the cost of a gallon and that represents the road tax).

I only do about 2000 miles a year in my car and an absolute maximum of 2000 on my bikes (I have 3 bikes (which I know is a little indulgent - although they are quite old) and on one of them last year did a grand total of 156 miles, yet had to tax it for a year because I don't know when I'm going to want to use it!)
I meant get a sensible car and you still have your bike for a thrill.
