Question re penalty points?

I was given 3 penalty points in June 2008 for exceeding statutory speed limit (36mph in a 30mph zone).
Is it correct that in terms of DVLA, these points clear after 3 years from your license BUT insurance companies will still factor it in to your policy quote for 5 years?? I am a bit unclear.

It's complicated. For totting up purposes, points last for 3 years. However they have to stay on your licence for 4 years. Most insurance companies ask you about "in the last 5 years"!

Thanks for that.
The difference for declaring the points is probably only a few quid.
So, if I was pulled by the police after June 2011, would it come up that I had 3 points on the PNC?
