my OH gained a chip in the car wind screen. It's due to an MOT this Friday. Would it fail? It's only a small chip, and we will be claiming on insurance to fix, but don't know whether it'll be fixed before Friday.

According to this link. If the chip is smaller than 10mm in front of the driver or smaller than 40mm elsewhere you should be ok.
If the chip is in the line of your Vision ( Drivers side ) the examiner could say that the chip could increase with a fracture line. It can fail but that depends on the Examiner.
This explains in detail.
