CD Player in Renault Scenic
The 6 stack CD player in my car has suddenly decided not to function. When I try to play a CD all I get is 'CD CHECK' on my dashboard screen. Nothing obviously wrong with the cartridge & tuner works fine. ICDs inserted correctly & 've tried manual operation as well as by remote arm but no joy. Looks clean inside the player too. Any ideas please?

The most common fault on CD/DVD players is that over time the laser goes ‘blind’ in that the plastic lens clouds. This was not a problem with older players that had a glass lens.

You might find that the player will recognise disks (for a short while) after using a lens cleaner, or that it will only play commercially produced ‘stamped’ disks, and not those burnt on a PC. Also try giving the disks themselves a clean.
If it is lens clouding – the fix is to replace the complete laser unit (within the player), but these days it is cheaper to replace the whole player.

Thanks to Albags & Hymie. Certain no disc is stuck - but you raise an intersting point Hymie. This happened a short while after I started using discs burnt on a PC. It won't recognise any CDs now - so whether the burnt CDs had an effect on the lens I really don't know. I have tried cleaning discs but no joy either. Car is almost 10 years old -don't know whether that means it had a plastic or glass lens. Guess the only option is to remove the CD player & examine it - but this could be tricky.
Playing disks produced on a PC would not cause damage to the player. At around 10 years old, the player will be fitted with a plastic lens – but that does not mean that is the problem.
Buy a lens cleaner disk from your local £/99p shop and give that a go. Try a variety of disks – should one play OK, even intermittently – this would strongly implicate the laser/lens.
Should you have the ability to replace the player’s laser unit, it can be tricky finding a supplier. CPC sell a range of laser units – but it is not easy to determine whether a particular model is fitted within your player.
