My sister's FIL was diagnosed with prostate cancer a few weeks back. He had it years ago and was successfully treated but now it's come back worse. They first thought it had spread to his pubic bone but now have found it's spread all over his body, to bones in his shoulder and other places but it is not in his blood stream. I am unsure as to how it spreads but the docs said it is a very fast spreading cancer and they want to start chemo straight away. He is 79 so age isnt on his side. What do you think his chances are? I watched my MIL die of lung cancer 4 years ago and the thought of his family going through the same is horrible. If they are treating him does that mean he has a chance of fighting it again?

Wide spread metastasis (distant spread) from a prostate cancer diagnosed only a few weeks back indicates a highly malignant tumour in a man of 79 years old.
Poor prognosis.......!........probably lucky to see Christmas.

Completely different prognosis than a man who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, years ago and then develops metastasis.

Just read your post again..............he was not diagnosed with it a "few weeks ago, but it was diagnosed "years ago and had returned"

Your sister or near family should ask his GP or Oncologist.

I presume they have but no one will give any indication, they never would when it was my MIL. Probably because its a bad prognosis like you say.

My father is 77 years old and goes to Rubgy hospital today to learn whether the blood tests confirm prostate cancer

homedeeth....the blood tests will not CONFIRM cancer of the prostate........only suggest the possibility.

Biopsy is the only confirmatory test.
