Driving licence points

Hi,

I have three penalty points on mu driving licence which are due to expire in August this year.

In Feb I attended a driving awareness course to not get 3 points on my licence however, this week I was caught doing 36 in a 30 zone.

I have been asked to confirm it was me driving the car (which it was). Am I likely to receive points and am I likely to get the additional points that I did not get when i attended the course?

Any advice appreciated.

Was there any small print regarding further offences in the offer of taking the course instead of points back in February?

Yes, you dont receive the three points for attending the course as long as you dont get caught speeding within a certain time period, I think it is 12 months.

When you take the course the three points you would have got are wiped out, they are not stored if you commit another offence and awarded again.

You will of course get another 3 points for any more speeding offences .

Craftypig is nearly right. The points are put on 'hold' for the life of the penalty (ie 3 years for totting up purposes and showing for 4 years on licence). I know, I have been there.

If I get caught speeding again will I get the points and have to pay the fine for the first offence?

No, this is a myth that we sometimes get asked to confirm. If you successfully complete the speed awareness course, you will not have to take the points or pay the fine for the first offence if you get caught speeding again. However, you will have to pay the fine and take the points for the new offence.

Certainly this is what I was told when I took the course.

Pauln90 - I stand corrected. It was about 5 years ago when I took the Speed Awareness Course at Lancashire County Council. At the time you did have to take the points and fine if caught again.
