Why do people think it's their right of way when joining a motorway ?.I drive a HGV so if I'm driving down a motorway and there is room, and it's safe for me to pull into the second lane to let you on the motorway I will. But obviously if there is another vehicle there I can't.So would all the drivers who are giving me the "V" sign for not moving out read the hi-way code and adjust your speed. Slow down to come on behind me or accelerate off down the slip road.I can't pull into the second lane if there's somebody in it.(some of these driver's have no understanding just how heavy or what damage 44 ton can do).

Really considerate people where you live by the look of it OG, don't think I've ever been there though, as that scenario does not sound familiar.
What I used to do if the slip on was total out of view Zabado, was to get into the middle, this way you do not get trapped, I think you understand my meaning! Eg/ A580 + Southbound M6, that road gets a lot of traffic from the L/Pool>>M/Chester areas & you can very easily get trapped if you do not forward think, if your in the middle no problem, I've seen a few HGVs get trapped there, you will have seen them in your part of the country no doubt?

My original question was not how do I get out of the way of the drivers on the slip road , but why don't the drivers on the slip road understand that THEY are supposed to give way and adjust THEIR speed, so drivers already on the motorway don't have to.

Highway Code

rule.259

Driving on the motorway.

Joining the motorway. When you join the motorway you will normally approach it from a road on the left (a slip road) or from an adjoining motorway. You should

give priority to traffic already on the motorway
check the traffic on the motorway and match your speed to fit safely into the traffic flow in the left-hand lane
Do not cross solid white lines that separate lanes or use the hard shoulder
stay on the slip road if it continues as an extra lane on the motorway
remain in the left-hand lane long enough to adjust to the speed of traffic before considering overtaking.
I can't believe the aggro aimed at zabado. As he says, if he can pull into the second lane he will, but those of us joining from a slip road must adjust our speed accordingly if he can't.
Where has common sense gone nowadays?
Please stop talking sense Wiltsman, you are spoiling the whole tone of the thread ;-)

I do agree with you though......
Of course, there are some slip road 'joiners' who have yet to master the basics!
Zabado, just in case you may think, I was not having a go at you I was just stating the way I use to go about it, but obviously we all have our different views.
some people have an issue with people who may find that they have to stop at the slip road entrance and wait for a gap.
although they are 'supposed' to slot into it etc etc its not always that easy...if you cant find a gap then you lose your speed and cannot just slot into a gap as you cannot get up to speed quick enough.

perhaps the people giving you abuse are scared of that.
Well I have an issue with anybody who comes to a stop at the end of sliproad how are they supposed to join a motorway from stationary with traffic going past at 70mph.Nearly got stuck behind one of these once. Had to undertake on the hard shoulder otherwise I would have been statonary behind them
Motley, popular or not, if there were no lorry drivers, many of the shops we all use would be empty.
I wish everyone thought like that ^ it would make everyone's journeys faster if they did.
ooo, that'll teach me to look if there's a second page.....

My comment was to OG @ 9:01 this morning.
I thought it was obvious: if you're joining a road full of vehicles that are already established on it, the onus is on *you* to give way until it's safe to filter in - even if you have to pull to a complete stop.
same as non-motorways, then, Chuck - you wait your turn.
oops, sorry, that was agreeing with Answerprancer.

<polishes specs>
well thats what i said jg... people dont want to have to come to a stop but if no-one lets them in they may find they have no choice, one the slip road runs out ... or should they just pull out anyway and hope the person behind manages to slow or stop in time?
You have to see some of these Idiots & their antics to belive it Answer, It's unbelievable to see them stopping at the bottom of the slip road.

Imagine this . . . .A 44 ton truck is traveling on a motorway at 56 miles per hour, another truck is overtaking it in the second lane. Your driving your 1 ton car down the slip road and indicating to pull onto the motorway. There's no gap for you to safely join the flow of traffic would you pull out in front of the 44 ton truck and 1.hope he's seen you 2.can brake in time 3.hope he doesn't lose control and take out the truck along side and in turn take out the traffic in the third lane, or would you brake. I also drive a car as well as a truck and if I was in my car I know what I would do .
