Urgent - Road Tax

can anyone tell me if there is a grace period for renewal of road tax?  I have misplaced my insurance policy and awaiting new documentation which will arrive between 3/5 days so I will be late in renewing my tax so need to know whether I can still drive my car?

Sadly I don't believe there is any 'grace' period these days. This follows on from the DVLA introducing a policy of continual taxation and the �80 penalty system.

As you are probably aware, this an automatic system based on their computer records. If road tax is not renewed an automatic penatly notice is sent out.

As for driving with no valid tax - well you take your chances. Insurance is probably invalid if untaxed both for driving and parking on the street. It's also illegal to park on the street without valid tax. So unfortunatetly a no-win situation.

The only option available in my opinion, would be to declare the vehicle off the road, albeit for a day or two, and park off the road.

it used to be 14 days unless it has changed in the last year,

and the reason it was 14 days was due to the time for the road tax details arriving and being proccesed on there computers,

Remember that you can, with all relvant documents, apply 14 days in advance of your tax disc expiring.

So from the DVLA point of view there really is no excuse.

Twiglet is right it did used to be 14 days.  Unfortunately not any more though, now there is no grace period

I asked the post office couple of months back and they said 14 days.

None of those details are needed if you cant find them as you can tax vehicles online now and it checks these thing for you.

Had received my documents today, so managed to renew my road tax just in time.
