M6 Toll - Charges

My Garmin SatNav took me onto the M6 toll road on my way back from a visit to Matlock. I was actually looking for M42 South. I had to put my card into the machine at the toll booth; it was immediately returned and the gate opened. However, although I was not asked for a PIN the £4 was taken from my account. How can this happen? If I went to Tesco and refused to use my PIN they would not allow me to buy anything.

because you were on a motorway and not in Tesco's - didnt you notice you stupid fellow ? No I dont mean that - my guess is contactless debit card
it has some concentric part circles on the opposite end to the chip.....

or contactless credit credit card - set to - holder not present transaction
by which you pay in such a situation as booking a hotel and then not turning up.

oh and do you drive like your avatar ? that could have been the reason - you were at neither the M6 or Tesco's but a sex shop......

As far as I'm aware, it's nothing to do with contact less cards, it's the way the machines are set up to speed traffic through. The toll booths in France have been like this for a long time...no pin number, no receipt.

It's just how they are, doesn't have to be contactless card - it's to save time when passing through and keep things moving (also, it's a set fee, and you don't have a choice about paying it by the time you get there!)

yes and the multi storey car parking pay machine in leeds in market does the same its far quicker, imagine all the people on the m6 fumbling for there number ,not putting it in right etc

How do I pay?

Payment can be made at either an attended lane with cash (at our Mainline Plazas only) or at an automatic booth (available at all Toll Plazas), using credit / debit cards or fuel cards, or coins only (no change given, 1, 2, and 5 pence pieces are not accepted). You can also pay in advance of your journey using the M6toll Tag which allows you to cruise through toll lanes without stopping.

What if I turn up without any money?

It's an offence to use the M6toll without paying. Midland Expressway will issue you with an Unpaid Toll notice with instructions on how to pay. We'll also take your name, address and vehicle registration and will require you to make the payment subsequently. Midland Expressway Limited takes the non-payment of tolls very seriously.
