does a car need an MOT is its only going to be driven on private land?

If it's going to be permanently on private land and not on the public highway, there's no need for an mot, insurance or tax.
But it must have a SORN - Statutory Off Road Notice declaration.
And you need to be careful about the land. For example, a golf course does not count as private as the public have access to it. Your field that nobody is supposed to drive on is fine.
