Road traffic accidents involving animals

What is the law in relation to hitting animals in car (not that I'm planning on doing it)! Is it true that you legally have to stop for a dog and other animal that is owned by someone (e.g cattle). What about poor pussy cat and wild animals, such as badgers and foxes, do you legally have to stop/report them?

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988, you have to report to the Police accidents involvong dogs, cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, horses, asses, mules and deer. All other animals count as 'free roaming animals' and do not have to be reported.

Just remember that the Metropolitan Police Dept (MPD)sh4g cattle

Unless the law has changed you do not have to report deer as stated above.

And you have to report Badgers (under the Badger Act not the RTA)

oddly enough you should not even attempt to stop for "free roaming animals" . Good job there aren't a lot of rhino's about then!

if You hit a dog or any animal you have to stop if its a dog you have to report it to the police cats badgers foxes etc you dont have to report the accident to the police but it is an offence to leave any animal injured and suffering after you have hit it, You cant just drive on leaving it injured. If you run over an animal you know its almost bound to be injured, If you fail to stop or drive off after seeing that its hurt anyone can report your registration number to the police and you will be done for it, Causing an animal unnecessary suffering!

You have to report to the police any accident involving a dog! Cats and other animals apart from farm animals You must report to the police farm animals) dont have to reported to the police but if you hit an animal you are bound to see if its injured. Injuring an animal including cats and leaving them injured can still result in the case being sent to court! You will probably be charged with causing an animal unnessesary suffering and failing to arrange for it to be treated, Failing to stop after hitting an animal is a serious offence if someone takes your registration number and reports you to the police
