Hi, my partner bought a brand new GSX-R600 from a well known dealer on tuesday and i just noticed that he didn't have a tax disc in the holder. As this is his only means of transport to work up london everyday. What would be the outcome if he got caught? He will notify the dealer first thing tomorrow morning.

Many thanks

Unless the dealer sold the car for an inclusive "on the road" price, there's absolutely no reason why the purchaser should expect it to be supplied with a tax disc. It's the responsibility of the registered keeper to ensure that the vehicle is taxed (and the responsibility of the driver, irrespective of whether he/she is the registered keeper, to ensure that a valid tax disc is displayed).

If your partner drives the vehicle without a valid tax disc, and he gets caught, he might get away with an 80 fixed penalty notice:

but he also risks getting clamped. If so, things can get very expensive:

Chris, It's a Bike!

Usually a new bike does come with tax but that's not a law. The dealer may well have it so he should check, if he not get it taxed asap.
If the dealer still has the tax disc you would be done for "failure to display"
He'd get a form called a CLE/6 if he used it on a public highway, and the form would be forwarded to DVLA who would decide whether or not to prosecute.

Just because the bike's brand new doesn't automatically mean it would be taxed and it's something which he should have checked before leaving the dealership.

And unless it was part of the deal, it's up to him to contact DVLA asap to arrange for it to be taxed.

Good luck.
Of course it would have to be insured to get a tax disc. If your partner insured it somewhere other than at the dealers they would not be able to tax it for him without the relevant documents.

No i paid for the tax disc! Thats the whole point of it! When you buy a bike, u pay for the registraton and tax disc. Otherwise how else can u ride away from the shop! But anyway, the shop said it was sent to us in the post. Then phoned back to say it was they posted it to him, and he was going to post it to us! What a complete **** up! Wont be going back there!
But road tax like rest of us, its only 16-35 pound for a year.
