It has been 40 years since I passed my car driving test - oh how standards have changed :-)

I seem to remember that the highway code recommended reversing OFF a main rain , so that you could drive straight on when necessary. ( making reversing onto the main road a no no).

Today I had a driving instructor ( no passenger in seat) reverse straight across a busy main road, causing me to brake sharply, before he drove off without a care in the world.

I have looked on the on-line version of the highway code but cannot find a reference to this. Can anyone help me please as I would like to address the Instructor.

There's no law (well, there is, but ...) that says a driving instructor must obey the rules of the road.
the words "if you can" are added to it

I am often surprised at how poor the driving is of instructors - do they not realise they are an advert for the quality of their teaching?
i saw an AA driving instructor driving with 4 adult passengers in his car plus a baby on knee once
should say baby was on rear passenger's knee and not the driver's
Red, apart from the increase in traffic, the Sod you jack Pratt's, you have to be very alert at ALL TIMES, the days are well gone that you can relax in the driving seat. If I would have seen what you have stated I would have taken the Reg & contacted either the company or the person running the Driving school.
I'm not surprised. Many years ago the few driving instructors were regarded as highly trained and experienced professionals. It's a bit different now. There are so many driving instructors around and the adverts on TV show that anyone can be a driving instructor. It's like univeristy students. They were the creme de la creme when just 2% of the education system when to university - but now! There are so many they seem to take anyone - and many can't even read or write properly!

Some of the worst drivers are police officers. Not Traffic but ordinary policemen and women in panda cars. They think because they are in a police car they can drive anyway they like. Just watch the panda cars - they drive like maniacs, don't indicate etc. My step-father was a policeman for 30 years and he was a terrible driver. He scared us! He got in trouble once for driving a panda car the wrong way up a one-way street. He just thought he could drive as he liked!

I'm afraid many of these driving instructors today are not as professional as we remember Red. Anyone can be an instructor now - so the adverts tell us!
Anyone can pay the money and do the training course. Not all of them pass - flipping expensive it is, too.
reversing across a main road is dangerous in any era. The whole reversing into a main road issue has not changed. The reversiin round a corner into a side road is still fine.
