My car tax runs out at the end of March and I've just been asked to go to the states for a month, leaving at the end of next week, so I since the renewal doesn't usually turn up until the week before I'm not going to be able to renew in time, the car will be on my drive - i.e. private land until I get back but it will be out of tax for a few days.

If your vehicle tax is due to expire while you’re abroad you can renew your tax up to two calendar months in advance in person or by post at a Post Office branch that deals with advance applications or a Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) local office.

You'll need to sorn it. Phone DVLA...or get someone to do it for you when your renewal comes in.

Ummmm - SORN it? It will only be out of tax for 4/5 days
Just leave it. If it's not being driven around then I wouldn't worry about it. I once had use of another car for about a year so mine was sitting in the garage the whole time and I didn't realise the tax lapsed until about 3 months after it should have been renewed. When I went to the post office to tax it the guy asked when it should have been taxed and I told him but that was it.
Sorry...I had just woke up. Can't you just do it on-line? As soon as it's paid for you're on the system and as the car is not on the road it won't matter if you're not displaying.
Milly - could get a fine for doing that. It has to be taxed or sorn.
It's highly unlikey he will get a fine unless someone spots the car. If it's parked up then I doubt that will happen.
One month after your tax runs out you will get a letter through the post stating that unless you either sorn the car or re-tax it you will receive a fine, regardless of if somebody spots it or reports it, it's done by computer!

I didn't wait to see what happened after that and sorned the car.
In fact I'm so confident nothing will happen that if he leaves it until he gets back and receives a fine, I'll pay it.
There you go, one month after the tax runs out. OP said it will only be out for 3 or 4 days.
