ABD Urges Government On Only A Fool Campaign

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

The Association of British Drivers (ABD) is launching a campaign to reduce accidents and fatalities caused by 'rear ending'.

The ABD and motor insurance firms are lobbying the government to bring back its Only a Fool Breaks The Two Second Rule Campaign, encouraging motorists to use a fixed point at the side of the road to measure a two second gap behind the car in front.

"This is the simplest and most effective way of educating drivers to maintain a generally safe following distance," commented an ABD road safety spokesman.

"Last used in the nineties, it requires no painting of the carriageway or expensive and often flawed technology." ABD is also lobbying for the government to promote awareness of ways to avoid being rear ended.

It recommends that motorists at the end of queues on busy roads or near corners or humps should stay in first gear with brake lights on and finger over the hazard button, ready to flash if a car comes up at speed.

"Adopting these campaigns could help the government meet their targets of reducing road casualties and would be far more effective than their current focus upon speed alone," said the ABD chairman.
