Car Key Theft Beaten

15:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Ever since modern immobilisers were invented, cases of key theft have risen, with motor insurance policies often taking issue with payouts in cases where they judge drivers to have been careless with their keys.

A welsh electronics firm has come up with an answer to the problem, however, with a transponder device that prevents thieves from driving away even if they have taken ignition keys.

The company installs a transponder in a hidden location in the car, which will not start until the key fob is touched against it. To start the car, a thief would have to know where the transponder was hidden.

"The customer decides where the transponder is fitted. It's a place where only they will know it exists, and it will work under quite thick trim," said a company director.

"If you offer that up to the transponder you have then got 15 seconds to start the car. You need to know exactly where that transponder is - and I mean exactly… The only way you can take the car away is to put it on a transporter."

It would also be a good device for parents to fit if they were worried about teenage children "borrowing" the car.
