Independent Garages 'Need To Sign Up To New Code'

People who are about to get car repairs done after an insurance claim may be pleased to hear the motor industry has been praised for its commitment to a new customer service code introduced earlier this year.

Consumer Focus said it was encouraged by the number of subscribers from franchised dealer networks to the Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and Repair. However, it stated it was now time for the independent sector to demonstrate a similar level of commitment.

The chief executive of Consumer Focus, said there were benefits to self-regulation, but the industry needed to cooperate. He added: "If the independents don't sign up, this leaves little option but to introduce a mandatory licensing system."

He explained garages would gain from signing up to the code, as it demonstrates to potential customers that it takes their rights to good service seriously.

Developed and launched in response to consumer concerns over pricing, quality of work and customer service, the Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and Repair safeguards consumer interests by helping them identify responsible garages. The aim of the Code is to deliver a minimum standard of operation which gives consumers adequate protection and helps to maintain a high level of customer service.
