Recommendations For A New Ipod

Having bought 2 secondhand ipod nanos and discovered that the battery life is extremely poor, I am looking to buy a new ipod - purely to listen to music whilst on the tube to/from work. Can anyone recommend anything please? I don't need to be able to take videos, photos, etc. etc. . I do have a mobile phone which is hardly used but I would really like a separate device for my music. I presume it would need to be an Apple product to be able to transfer all my music over to the new device - so I'm guessing that something like a Sony MP3 player would not be appropriate? Any help gratefully received - I really do not know my way around all these different things. Many thanks in advance for your help.
