The Rubettes hit the high notes

The very high intro to " Sugar Baby Love " is sung by a female singer.

So , when they performed live how did the lead singer of the Rubettes reproduce the falsetto notes?

Was a tight Grip involved?

What makes you think it was sung by a woman? I have seen The Rubettes, they sang the song live, high notes and all, and they sang an a capella version of Neil Young's 'After The Gold Rush' that brought tears to my eyes - under-rated or what?

Good song. I actually read somewhere that the part was performed by a male session singer.
Andy, was it the original lead singer (Alan someone isn't it?) - who mimed the part on Top Of The Pops - who performed the falsetto part when you saw them?

I heard that the original " Haaah- Dooby - Do Waah " was done by a female Backing singer . However , theres obviously a range of opinion judging by the answers. Maybe I heard it wrong

Are they still going? I wouldnt mind seeing them again - very happy memories of Sugar Baby Love and I Can Do it.

Yes they sang those high notes. The singer was a guy named Paul DaVinchi and he had a falseto range.

Isaw them about 3 years ago, they were on tour with Showaddy waddy and Sweet. They were very good as were Sweet, alas Showaddy waddy were a disappointment as the singer's (was it Rick Dees?) voice was poor.
