A friend of mine made a tape for me about 12 years ago. It contains the full classic Jazz album "Kind of Blue," and then there is a track tacked on at the end of the tape. It is an absolutely beautiful ballad-type song, all instrumental. The group I think consists of drum and bass, vibraphone and alt sax. The sax plays the melody. I have sampled several of David Sanborn's cds, thinking he might be the sax player, because the tone is like his. I would love to know where this song came from!! Can you give me some suggestions?
I am answering my own question because I wanted to add something to the question, but couldn't see how to. I want to add that there is also piano on this song, and it sounds a lot like Bill Evans, who played on Kind of Blue. Also, the song fits well with the mood of Kind of Blue.
One strong possibility for the alto player is Cannonball
Adderley. He played on the "Kind of Blue" session, and also made several recordings with Bill Evans. And he was pretty good on ballads. I don't know about the vibraphone though.
