Agents for a Pop Single?
2 Answers
Can anyone help me in my search for an agent or management company that could get my brother's pop single released. He's written a corker and I'm sure it's going to be a hit... The only problem I'm finding ringing round all the music labels is that they seem to be saying that they don't really accept demos any more, and if they do they are not really inclined to look at them (presumably they get so many every day?)
Basically I am preparing a mailshot for him but don't want to send out a hundred if they're all going to be binned. The larger labels have all told me that they accept demos but only via a reputable agent or management company. So I have been searching for these but they seem difficult to find (mabye I'm not looking in the right places!)
They seem to not be very forthcoming with information and I'm trying to be a bit pushy but don't want to upset anyone before I've even started. Does anyone know any names or websites of reputable agents etc. that I could call and speak to, or post out to. I'm dead sure that this single would sell and I'm really excited for my younger brother, and have promised him I'd do the anal paperworky bit. If anyone could point me in any direction on this I'd be extremely grateful!
Thanks all for your help as always.

If your brother thinks he has the kind of music that they may be able to represent (he will need to look at the bands the different agents represent), he should send a demo CD to the agent concerned.
The order of tracks on the demo is important, the first one being the one that draws the listener in and that should define the artist's music. Then if the agent wants to hear more, he/she will use the other tracks to get an overview of what's on offer.
The agent I spoke to said that she does actually listen to all the demos she receives - eventually, because she gets lots. She appreciates a demo that is well presented because, she says, it shows that the band cares about itself. Also (unlike in the publishing world), if a band calls her to check the progress of their submission, she's quite likely to pick it out from the pile and have a listen to it there and then. Again, she appreciates a band that is more likely to promote itself in the event she takes them on. Demonstration of self-belief is vital to her.
