You could try:

Kyu Sakamoto - had a huge worldwide hit with 'Sukiyaki' in the 60s; died in a plane crash in 1985

Meiko Kaji - 'Urami-Bushi', as featured on the Kill Bill soundtrack

Ryuichi Sakamoto - 'Forbidden Colours' (duet with David Sylvian)

Yellow Magic Orchestra - 'Computer Game', an instrumental hit based on the Space Invaders noises
