The friday rockshow - Tommy Vance.
11 Answers
Hi all ( again ) ! I'm trying to track down an audio copy, or written listing of the bands that featured in a particular Friday night rock show - Radio 1 circa late '81 but almost certainly early '82. These are some of the tracks that featured: Back to earth - Magnum Attack of the mad axeman - MSG Love times love - Heavy Pettin and then a song by a band called " sheeva or shiva "or something similar ... I've searched extensively for a band by that name, and there are some, but nothing that fits the FNRshow bill ! Any ideas guys. Eddie

Can't help with the tack listing I'm afraid, but Shiva were a NWOBHM 3-piece from Bristol and one of the very best NWOBHM bands (along with Diamond Head, Witchfinder Genera, Voltz and Trespass) IMHO. They had one album out called "Firedance" and a couple of singles (one of which was called "Angel Of Mons"). I recall hearing them on the Rock Show myself...the track was "Wild Machine" - great riff, slow verse, vocodered chorus, quiet middle section, great guitar solo. I loved it so much I bought the album! Check this out:

Hope this helps!

Eddie,
Talk about "late replies"! Sorry mate - not really that technically minded at all. As far as I can grasp, if your PC has the necessary technical resources, it will be able to play it. Check out the "Vibrations of Doom" website though (if you haven't already). Manna from Heaven for old metalheads (like me). I sent them some dosh - check the introductory spiel & conditions - and got loads of stuff on CD. Including Shiva.
Cheers,
Dave (the ScreaminTree)

Hi Eddie, hopefully you have your answer but you seem like you may be able to help me! I have an old Rock Show recording from a similar period and have been trying for ever to find out who three instrumental prog rock type tracks were by. The other artists featured on the show (it may have been two shows actually) were Sammy Hagar: Heavy Metal title track, Tank: Don't Walk Away, Girl: Sweet Kids(?), Demon: One Hell of a Night, Gillan: Born to Kill (a studio version I have NEVER found), Alcatrazz: Blame it on the night, Iron Maiden: Number of the beast, Raven: Over the top, Saxon: Fire in the sky and Gillan: Hadely Bop Bop.
A link to your original question is the only hopeful looking internet search I have ever come across...hope you can help! Grant

Hi there Grant.
Hopefully Dave ( the screaminTree ) will chip in also, as i believe he IS the font of all rock music knowledge !
Prog rock instrumentals ..Hmm
the tracks that spring to mind immediately and without any research are probably known to you already, but it's a starting point - here goes.
Focus - Sylvia / Hocus Pocus ......( obviously )
Jon Lord - Bach unto This
Ritchie Blackmoor - Maybe next time ( not very Prog Rock )
erm ......
Was there also a track by Van der Graf ..... ?? I'll work on that one!
I have all of the above plus thousands more, so on the off-chance that you're not sure about the initial few above, let me know and i'll Email them to you.
Lets get some more Muso's on this question !!
I'll be back.

Eddie thanks for the suggestions!
I was aware of Focus but hadn't ever heard any of Jon Lord's solo stuff but as a big Gillan/Purple fan, it was a good find. The recording I have is on cassette somewhere ( I have moved 4 times in 3 years and cannot currently find it! )
Now I actually have an outlet to discuss this, I've thought long and hard about what I remember about these tracks. All I recall for sure was one track finished with a keyboard crescendo that was a variation of the Marseillaise!
I've listened to snippets of all the bands I thought it could be on allmusic.com and still haven't found them although some styles sound close. Other peoples suggestions have been The Nice, ELP, Tangerine Dream (sounds vaguely possible), and Van Der Graaf but wasn't most of Tommy's playlist contempary? Maybe not in which case limiting my search to 1981-82 might be why I haven't found them!

Hi there Grant.
If you send your email address to me, i'll mail back a couple of tracks. for your delictation !
I agree that you may need to widen your search, and you know that ref to Marseillaise rings a bell with me definately, i'm thinking circa 79/80 ...
I'm exploring the deepest recesses of my grey matter as i type..
I shall return :0)
