I don't think it's that new - just a little more public. Whether it's what she wants, I'm not so sure. She was at a festival I was working on a couple of years ago, and I saw quite a bit of her backstage, away from the public eye.
I wouldn't say her behaviour was offensive, then, and whether she had used anything, I wouldn't know. But she certainly wasn't standing around on ceremony. She didn't seem to be having anything to do with 'ladylike' or 'gracious' - not the kind of artiste to be crossed or argued with. However, all those who met her and worked with her on that day only had good things to say about her, about her professionalism, her attitude towards the crew and the very relaxed way she dealt with people.
She just ain't a 'lady' that's all, and now she's becoming more popular, that side of her is coming out.
