Why won't my Laptop play some DVD's?

I have been playing DVD's on my laptop, but last night I tried to play a rental DVD from a well known outlet, and it says "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a problem occurred with digital copyright protection." help me anyone? By the way this prob applies to all my DVD viewing software.
