jumping dvds

Right, my laptop won't play dvds just now. i know its the software because iv fixed it before by restoring the factory settings, but id like to avoid this again. is there a virus or something preventing my dvd player working? cds arent as bad but when trying to run sound and image at the same time it skips. same when im riping or burning a cd and trying to lkisten to music at the same time, the sound just skips.
