I'm planning to buy CDs (yes, I still use those) of several of the G & S operettas. I haven't had any for some time - since the vinyl ones expired, actually! - and wonder if anyone could recommend some good recordings. Not compilations, but the full versions, starting probably with Iolanthe, HMS Pinafore, Pirates of Penzance and Mikado. I looked on Amazon, but there's quite a choice and some seem to be re-mastered old recordings. Is the quality on these OK?
Many thanks.
Many people would claim that the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company recordings are the very best that you can get. (Until the copyright expired on G&S works, D'Oyly Carte was the only company which was permitted to record G & S, since they held the licensing rights ).
