Retro sweets
19 Answers
Hi all, I'm searching for retro sweets, getting some together as part of Mrs D's birthday prezzie. I have trawled ebay for some she has mentioned in the past, all from the 70's by the way! So far I've got fruit salad and blackjack chews, monkey bars (toffee and banana flavour) and anglo bubble gum. the others I can't find are the ones that had free skin transfers with yellow smiley faces and others with cartoon like pictures, don't remember if they were gum or chews! I remember licking the back of your hand and holding the transfer on. There was another sweet that was like a square tablet of fizzy chalky textured stuff that crumbled when you bit it. Anyone know if these are still available somewhere? What sweets do you remember?

They used to make the roof of my mouth sore, so did pineapple chunks, sweet peanuts (we bought some in a so called retro sweet shop in Whitby, they were tat, didn't even have bits of peanut in, wot a swizz). Thanks for the links, gonna scour them and maybe even sneak mesel something ;)
Sweet peanuts were the best. We have a little old fashioned sweet shop in a nearby town but I can never decide what to buy - too much choice! But its a great idea as a present, got me thinking about making up a sweet hamper/mixed jar for a friend now. What are you going to put yours in Dagman?
In this day and age do we buy a quarter of sherbet lemons or 100g?

Are they called Pez sweets which you put into a dispenser? If it it, they still sell them.
I remember Texan Bar (chewy bar covered in chocolate) and Fizzy Lizzies both of these were good at pulling fillings out!

I remember the Pez sweets, like tiny bricks I think? The ones I'm looking for were a 1n1/2" square about 1/4" thick so were much bigger. The sweet peanuts I remember had bits of peanut in and when you bit through it tasted salty, wonderful. I've spotted red sweet lips and foam bananas, they're going on the list. Still no sign of the smiley face transfers tho!
cigarette sweets, aniseed twists, humbugs, cola cubes, flying saucers, sherbert dips, and jublee, the orange pyramid, that took ages to eat, because it was so cold. Lots of shops now selling these old sweets, many haven't gone away, but children of all ages, me included still like them
