Middle or late 1980s posibly early 1990s, heard it on UK Top of the Pops at the time but was not a hit as far as I remember.

The lyrics was of a man, a solider who carried his buddy in or out of a jungle, rescued him, took care of him, maybe both got lost.

It was in the mode of "Big Bad John", that kind of thing but sounded nothing like it.

Yes, Stan Ridgeway seems to be the one as it was from 1986 and the stories match, although I don't recall the video
