If you sing, play on an instrument or even tap on the table, "Da, da, da-da, da", someone will reply "Da, da".

Where does this originate?

This tune seems to be known as "shave and a haircut, two bits"
So you can enter that into google and you will end in one of these pages:

Hee - reminds me of that bit in 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' when Christopher Lloyd as the Judge was going round knocking da, da-da, da, da on the walls of the caf in order to lure Roger out - which he did and Roger bursts out "TWO BITS!!!"
As featured in 'Who framed Roger Rabbit?'. Roger cannot stop himself from saying '2 bits' when anyone says the 'shave and a haircut' part, so the baddy uses this knowledge to get the rabbit to reveal his hiding place.

curses..pipped at the post again

seem to remember johnny depp singing"match in the gas-tank,boom boom"to leo dicaprio in whats eating gilbert grape to that tune!!!
