Why did the Pogues decide to call themselves the Pogues?

Pogues is short for an Irish term for "Kiss My A***"

The band's original name was Pogue Mahone, which Phil D correctly points out is Gaelic for a rather robust response! The record company advised the band that this approach was likely to hinder future chart / gig prospects, so the band opted for the shortened name.
