It's as the result of the phonological loop, a core component in Working Memory.

You'll notice that if you're paying attention to something, and someone is talking to you, and you are ignoring them, if you figure they've said something important you can retrieve it from immediate memory, where it was sitting in a loop. That is the phonological loop. It can be disrupted by certain music like elements (da da DA da da DA), so it can reasonably be hypothesized that the tune of a song sits in this loop and just gets played back to you continually.

(I would like to apologize to FP for having received an education which allowed me to know this fact)

It is usually a song you have heard early in the morning, and an incredably irritating song too. Recent examples of songs that have been stuck in my head all day are Amerillo and peter andre's Mysterious Girl.
