My girlfriend and i had a discussion on who to vote. We live nr Oldham and its muti-racial which we have no problem with. I put forward my reasons for voting who i going to vote with my friends and they agreed.
Now i am English and i am patriotic, i cannot change how i am, its passionate, now i know right from wrong, i have been given a good enough education to know that this country is being ran in the wrong way.
If we had laws and corresponding punishments to fit those laws then i dont think that this would have happened to this family. It is not an isolated incident, knife crime is on the increase.
We are certainly not Great Britain anymore and don't people know it, talk about being kicked while we're down, I have travelled all over Europe and other parts of the world, no other country accepts the crimes we do, apart from the Yanks and we're stupid enough to think they are stupid!!
Prevention is the cure not reaction!
Chose wisely! i am because i am certainly not going to let my family become a statistic. If it means paying slightly more in taxes then i am willing to do so, i bought a burgular alarm to protect my possesions and it did not come for free!!
Thank you mattvanduck - I think your points are very valid - as someone who has lived and worked in different countries I agree that as a nation we don't do enough to prevent crime (USA is a law unto it's own! - and yes I've lived and worked there too!) - would you get this kind of crime in Turkey for example? No. Trouble is with things like capital punishment - the argument always goes "do you have the right person" - DNA is the answer to that I think - we've come along way in crime solving since the use of DNA ID.
Thank you silly moo for your confirmation of my thoughts.
El d - I agree - thoughts must always go to those who have lost in all kinds of tragic circumstances (I myself have experienced a tragic loss) - I would like to point out that I was not trying to be political or provocative - this story has really hit a nerve with me as a mother myself whose world revolves around my son, it just distresses me so much that this mother has been left in a state of paralysis, not being able to communicate verbally or physically hold her son - (her son of which had the knife held to his throat I might add and of course the situation is affecting him). I did not mean to devalue anybody else's situation in cases of crime/murder/tragic consequences eg Tsunami - it was just one particular story that has touched me in a big way.
You may care to read two threads in the news section, one entitled hanging, the other padeophiles, on page 2, for a discussion on capital punishment (with which I disagree).
Twas a nice original post tho :)
Lets hope that Abigail does recover from this horrendous attack and all my familys thoughts and prayers are with her and her loved ones.
but to respond to mattvanduck I dont think the world or this country is getting worse the politicians are using fear to keep the population suppressed. During this election campaign so far not one party has come out and been positive in its manifesto thay all seem to be attacking each other and saying thing like under labour/conservative etc think will go back to the dark days, so and so party will ruin this, that and the other. Also with media being such a global thing we get to hear about things on the other side of the world in seconds which makes it seem we are constantly bombarded with bad news. News people are hungry for something that will put them at first place on the top of the pile so thay will look for the most violent, shocking, disgusting crime that they can find to put them there. I am always positive and if you look a bit deeper there are always positives everywhere. It doesnt help Abigail much but it is an isolated incident which the opposing politicians like to jump on to attack other parties and to put fear into the people not to vote for them. I wish Abigail a speedy recovery and for her and her family to look forward
