Soft lump on cat's back

My cat is 12, I've just noticed a soft lump on one side of his back, could this be anything to worry about? It doesn't seem to bother him when I touch it. It moves about, not rock hard, feels like a lump of fatty tissue.

Probably a cyst, and nothing to worry about, can't tell from here though.

It does sound like a cyst - our No. 1 Son had one - the vet took it off and had it checked out, just in case. it was benign. Worth mentioning to the vet the next time you take him.

May be just a fatty lump , my dog had several . Hadn't realised just how weighty she had become -- so following a diet now and the lumps are lessening.Is your cat a little bit too heavy?

i agree with others just keep an eye on it for any change in shape or sudden growth if it stays the same just show vet next time you go

Sounds like a lipoma.........not malignant.......not dangerous.........may not even grow much larger.

I don't think that fatty lumps only occur on fat cats, although the only real experience I have of them is that my oldest labrador has a few of them, and he is certainly not overweight.

Could just be fatty tissue. It's quite common in older cats and dogs. Given the cat's age, though, it could be worth a quick checkup with the vet, if only to put your mind at rest.

Thanks everyone, he is quite a large ginger tom, thinks he's a labrador - loves his food. Doesn't look like a cyst, nothing sprouting through the hair, about three inches wide and very soft. Above the ribs. Will keep an eye on it.

Quite common on humans too and it doesn't have anything to do with them being weighty. I know someone who has quite a few and has had them since he was a young man - and he is not weightby.
