Why does music played on an accordion immediately depict France? A quick look on the web shows it was invented in Germany with no more popularity in France than anywhere else - yet travel programmes, for example, use it as background music for France and that's what I think of when I hear it.

Yes, and for Germany they have some sort of barrel organ type of music.
