I think it's always been the same. I'm in my 30s and I remember a time when bands like Starsailor and Embrace were releasing some really good music and it wasn't having any sort of impact on the top 40 but eurotrash pop such as Scooter were getting number 1 records. I think you need to look past the top 40 - there is still some fantastic music being made and released it's just not in the mainstream. As a fan of live music also, I don't necessarily think it's always a bad thing - I've seen some fantastic bands for £15 - £20 a ticket, that a year or two later when they've hit the big time and everyone knows who they are (Kings of Leon) they're selling out arenas at £60 a ticket!
