James Earl jones i think? The actual person in the suit was David Prouse
According to the newspaper the other day it was James Earl Jones. It was Dave Prowse in the suit.

It's a shame that Dave Prowse didn't provide the voice aswell, we would have been treated to the immortal lines such as

"Ooh arr, the Force be strar-ng in this 'un"

and perhaps

"Now oi am the mar-ster, so get orf moi Death Star"

Brachiopod Postings Ltd would like to apologise for the technical problems occurring in the previous post. This may have resulted in some AB'ers experiencing severe instances of West Country-accent stereotyping.

This was caused by circumstances beyond our control, and not helped by the several pints of cider imbibed earlier. We trust that no offensh was caushed.

I can confirm it was James Earl Jones, in the easiest question I have ever answered, ever.

lol

It seems that Darth Vader was referred to in the Studio as "Daft Ada"

Sorry if this is old info!

brachiopod  why shouldn't the Empire have had people with regional accents? The Universe must have a lot!

Also, shouldn't it be 'now Oi be the mar-ster....'

(alias The Mair of Car-sterbridge.)

Not sure of the full story, but apparently it was originally recorded with David Prowse doing the voice and then James Earl Jones' voice was dubbed over afterwards. Much to the annoyance of Mr Prowse who was unaware that they were going to do this until he saw the final edit!

Oh, and just in case you were wondering, when Darth Vader's helmet is removed in ROTJ, the actor you see is not David Prowse, but Sebastian Shaw!

and in episode 3 revenge of the sith they were to get david prowse to be in the costume again but hayden christian wanted to be in it even tho he is too short, so they had to add 5 inch platforms to his boots to give him the height.

Chewbacca is the same actor in the suit "Peter Mayhew" as the original 70's film and ws quite relived to find that 28 years on they had incoporated a robotic moving mouth and water cooled piping inside the costume to make it easier for him.
