Mark, a pity You tube got the title of the Rush song wrong!
Mick, thanks so much for this idea - wonderful!

OK - first off, I have of course listened to all the tracks, and I have realised that the common thread running through the majority that i don't 'get' is either the vocalist's voice - Morrisey, Albarn, Lee, Diamond, or the song structure which i can't get a comfortable handle on.

So, for that reason -

I LOVED The Fix, and will check out more of Elbow. I should alos say that I adore An Audience With The Pope. but felt utterly unmoved by the band's headline at Glastonbury last year.

Tender - nope, still got that cod-Cockney whine thing going on.

How Soon Is Now - i can never forget Bill Bailey's summing up of Morrissey - that he sings the same three notes up and down, and even the wide-screen technicolour grandeur of this tune can't hide his awful sound. That said, I brook not argument that What Difference Does It Make? represents an oasis of class in a desert of mediocrity - the sheer friving guitars and drums over-ride M's droning noise.

Spirit Of The Radio - nope, always found Geddy Lee's falsetto very odd, and the prog time signatures lose me quickly.

We Used To Know - the Anderson voice again kills it, as does the whimsey of their tumes.

That's Entertainment - Morrisey solo - irredeemable.

You Do Something To Me - I admit my perception of Weller is coloured by my meeting with him once, when he was very rude to me, and I still think Going Underground is a fabulous song.

Neil Daimond - I have always found his lyrics and his strructures to be off-kilter, and I seriously dislike his voice, and his increasingly awful wigs.

Thanks again all for your time and trouble - much appreciated.
For the record, Geddy Lee doesn't sing falsetto...
A fair point Mark - however, I still struggle with the sound of his vocals, and their obstinately complex time signatures. I tend to agree with the detractors of Rush that they are masses of talent mis-used - an argument I utterly refute with ELP - it's a matter of what you enjoy - or not.
Complex is as complex does, I suppose. I was pretty much raised on prog rock, so Rush's time signatures don't sound particularly complex to me. How do you get on with Apocalypse in 9/8, or the second half of Cinema Show, or Take Five...?
My approach to prog. is pretty selective - I don't really like the Foxtrot album at all, but I love Trspass and Nursery Crime. I find the really 'out there' prog hard to get my head around, because I do still love a good 'tune' - which makes a lot of modern jazz a closed book to me. I am mugging up though, becuase I an interviewing Cindy Blackman and Jack Bruce about their new jazz project in Montreal in June.
I like some of Primus' stuff. But I don't 'get' them!
The spirit of radio. Not Spirit of the radio,or The spirit of the radio!
Sorry!!!
andy-hughes - I'm glad I'm not the only one who isn't afraid to look uncool and admit to liking a few Genesis albums! Trespass was pure magic to me as a teenager.

Re Morrissey/The Smiths - I never really got the Smiths at the time, but a couple of years back I saw Morrissey performing 'Girlfriend in a Coma' and really appreciated the dark humour
I'm a stippler for detail!
