How many of you are comfortable singing in public? I've been told that as part of my administrative/management job I now have to spend 45 minutes a week singing to 20 odd mothers and their children and I'm not one bit happy about it!!! I don't even sing when I'm drunk!

what sort of job is this?
I thinking singing children's songs I'd be ok with but anything remotely serious.... Nah!
Maybe you misheard and they meant signing.

Library coordinator Howard. I've worked in libraries over 20 years and it's never been part of the deal.
Evian - it doesn't matter to me what type of singing. I never even did that with my own daughter.

Definitely singing Mik
tape and mime
I would blatantly refuse!!

I would howard, but they're an unruly lot so there'd be a lot of stopping and starting :)

I already did when I took up the post Ratter, and the boss accepted that, but he's now done a u-turn :(
Any old "Silence" signs from your library?
Question Author
Nah Wharton. That's old hat these days. We are meant to be vibrant and full of energy. Needless to say, my boss is about 12 :)
Karen. If your voice is as bad as mine this could be a health and safety issue and could even be considered to be a form of abuse to make the children listen. Seriously. I have only ever let someone hear me sing once and I was asleep at the time.
you will be sent out busking for ur wages - lol

I told them I'd rather they drilled my teeth and pulled my fingernails out than get up and sing. Apparently that's not a good enough excuse
Tell them you feel bullied and harrassed about it and if they insist will have to take further steps as it';s making you feel ill, as you are very shy about your dreadful singing voice ;-)
Thank you for the compliment on the Buzzard post the other day Nox - was too busy at the time googling and organising argument to say 'ta'.

I plan on going to the union if they push it, but it is in my (and every other library worker's) contract (along with the old chestnut 'and any other duties'), so I dunno if I've a leg to stand on really. I've hardly slept all week and apparently I was talking in my sleep last night for the first time I know of. I think it's straightjacket time for me :)
Shall we all come Karen? Form a choir.....
I have to do something similar in my job and I don't have the best voice in the world but I just remind myself that the children don't care if I can't sing and most of the parents aren't any better at it than I am. Take a deep breath and just go for it - it's not as scary as you think. I warm up by singing in the car on my way to work, it gets you some funny looks at traffic lights though!
Can you not cite the Geneva convention?
