Ironically, the highest-placed version in the UK charts was actually by Stephen Houghton. Who? A bloke out of "London's Burning" who released his version during the dead period just after christmas. But never mind him...
The first version to hit the charts was by Lee Greenwood in 1984 - it only reached number 49 but was 5 years earlier than the Divine Miss M who made it all the way to no.5. Mr Greenwood then disappeared without trace. (Have you heard the spoof version "The Wind Beneath My Sheets"?)
