It's all relative... To my father, music by the likes of Chuck Berry hasn't yet grown old, but it has to my older sister. To my sister, artists like The Spin Doctors and Nirvana haven't grown old, whereas they have to me. To me, music like that of Blur hasn't grown old, but to my younger friends, it has.

There will be people who will tell you that classical music hasn't grown old. Similarly, there are those who will say that music in last week's chart has already grown old.

With the possible exception of Take That, in which I think we're all in agreement that their sell-by date was late 1996.

Stiff Little Fingers. Their stuff from 1977 might be old, but they're still going strong 28 years on and still singing about stuff that matter in the here and now. My kids of 14 and 17 love them just as much as I do!

I suppose the current big touring bands like U2, Bon Jovi, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Eagles, REM, etc. can still pull in the punters with a mix of old and new.  Elton John still seems to be popular.  Even Queen are back again, albeit without Freddie.

For me sam cooke marvin gaye and otis redding tracks have not aged, as does songs by the clash, the pistols and david bowie....and a song like strawberry fields forever or rain by the fab four still sounds fresh and inventive nearly 40 years after they were made..
One of the most timeless songs for me was written by Charlie Chaplin more than 50 years ago it's called "Smile"

Nat "king" Cole had a big hit with it in the 50's and more recently it was a hit for Westlife.

Smile, though your heart is aching.
Smile, even though it's breaking.
Though there are clouds in the sky,
you get by...

If you smile through your fears and sorrows.
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through.

If you just light up your face with gladness,
Hide every trace of sadness.
Although a tear may be ever, ever so near.

That's the time you must keep on trying.
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find life is worthwhile
If you'll just smile, come on and smile.

If you just smile.

You mean what groups survive when others of their era are forgotten? Another good question would be who today will not live past the era we are in? I think Eminem and all the hip hoppers will be forgotten while Nine Inch Nails lives on and even undergoes a future revival. Queen is immortal, Pink Floyd is immortal. Who today will someday be immortal? Very few, if any, IMO.

INXS is coming into immortality, it seems.

i think inxs are one of the last bands to describe as immortal, lets face facts before hutchence death they were as a band a busted flush, although they made one or two good tracks i think as a act they were ordinary...
