Ignoring the legal aspects, if the sites are free there will be a catch in my experience in terms of unwanted tool bars etc

generally you cannot expect safety during theft. There will always be a "cost", intrusive ads/popups at best, full scale hijacking/malware at worst.

There are many free download sites where there are legal issues but I agree with deggers that spotify is okay from a legal point of view as I understand it.

The music available is limited but spotify's catalogue is worth looking at and new stuff keeps getting added. I'm not sure what pop ups/toolbars etc you'll get but I'd expect some
