career for me?

Hi guys,

Having a little trouble deciding what to do with my life and thought i'd come here for help...I've just turned 22 and graduated last year with a 2.1 in Zoology. I moved to London in October and got a job working as a maths teaching assistant (just by applying for EVERY job under the sun) the pay is pretty crap for someone with a degree but it's lasted me til now.

In 4 weeks we break up from school and i have 6 weeks paid holiday, during which i think i'm going to try and find another job or at least take a look out there...but i need inspiration as don't really know what options i have with my degree and just generally.

Next year i think i would like to do a little bit more travelling and have considered getting work on a cruise ship or working abroad somewhere else, so am wondering if it is worth me trying to get an actual career for life or if i should just stay in the Teaching Assistant job for one more year then go travelling? Will i be too old by then to get on the career ladder?

Any advice welcomed as i aint got a clue!

Personally I'd say do another year as a teaching assistant and then go travelling. Your certainly not too old to start a career even in 2-3 years time so don't worry about that.

These days a degree isn't worth all that much unless it's relevant to a particular field your interested in. It used to set people appart but with the number of people now going to Uni it's become almost dare I say it standard to have one.

WIthout wanting to sound like a careers advisor, what interests do you have outside of work? (Booze doesn't count)

At the risk of sounding like a complete plant pot, what i would absolutely love to do would to be a singer....don't even care if it aint much money but i absolutely love it.

I always said that i would go to uni, get a good degree to fall back on and then pursue a singing career and it would appear the time is now bu ti have absolutely no idea where to start and am scared that it is such a competitive industry.....so rather than follow my dreams i feel like i'm willing to settle for anything. Am I selling myself out?

can u not find or advertise for a few people to help u join a band u are setting up? then promote yourself at pubs or clubs or something? my cousin has done that and is regulaly pulling in about 250 - 300 people to there gigs every month and the band as a whole earn about �300- 400 each gig. Once u have got a bit of experience under u then u should record a demo tape and send it to several record companies! Alternativly audtion for xfactor/pop idol etc and try the very difficult approach that way.

Failing that have u ever thought of doing something wacky for a career using your degree?

You don't sound like a complete plant-pot wanting to be a singer.

Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell, Jade Goody and Katie Price are all totally devoid of talent.

That hasn't stopped them assembling multi-million pound fortunes, all before they were 30.
