No. I don't normally enjoy watching films but really enjoyed The Artist
no, it was one of the best film have seen in years. Far better than much of the dross that is on offer today.
yeah - or On the Waterfront.....Brief Encounter.......True Grit.......
I like Brief Encounter
Question Author
On The Waterfront is one of my all-time favourites!
The Artist looks authentic but the story is so trite that I suspect that the film studios would have rejected it back in the 20s/30s when they churning out movies by the bucketload.
Hiroshima, Mon Amour'. 'The Seven Samurai'. And, in general, anything where the director is described as 'auteur' and anything by Jean-Luc Godard are grossly overrated films.

Agree about Citizen Kane. I think it is praised far more for its camera angles and direction, plus the daring of Welles in mocking Hearst, than for its entertainment value. That's why film buffs and students of cinematography rate it so highly. Battleship Potemkin is always rated highly for cimematographic reasons too
The "Twilight" movies for me were ridiculously overrated.
I found "Avatar" very underwhelming as I did with "The Matrix"
Its a wonderful Life.
bibble, did you actually see it, the story isn't trite, it's very clever, and more a love letter to the golden age of Hollywood, than anything. A silent film star who refuses to move with the times. When talkies came in they wiped out many a career. I have watched hundreds of silent films in my time, many starring Chaplin, Keaton who were geniuses, and this film isn't supposed to measure itself against those early films, but more complement those who made them.
compliment, that should be...
em10 - i own it on blu-ray, and also own about 300 films dated from before 1930
The artist was a fantastic move so much better that 'acting' infront of a bluescreen - more please.
p.s. i reckon that it's trite when comparing it to films from any era
Titanic, The Ring films, Unforgiven
Yes I totally agree, I thought it was rubbish.

My other overrated films are Avatar, Mama Mia and the Twilight movies.
Easy to look at something like Citizen Kane and think it overrated when everything that came after it copied its techniques.

The Artist had some very good camerawork and some clever bits but it was essentially backward looking (well that was the point wasn't it ?) rather than innovative.
i agree about citizen kane add to that forrest gump what absolute tosh
As I usualy say when these questions come up, it's important to differentiate between simply not liking a film, and it being a lousy film which is over-hyped.

I don;t like 'It's A Wonderful Life' at all but it is clearly a very good film, just not to my taste, wheras 'Four Weddings' is lauded as a great movie when it is a luvvie-fest pile of tosh.

Not seen The Artist or CK, so can;t comment.

Oh, before i forget, i didn't enjoy 'Lincoln' at all, but it is clearly a fantastic piece of work with a wonderful performance by Daniel Day Lewis.
