I can't say I like any of it, but what sort of control would you envisage? Banning YouTube and MTV?

When I was a teenager it was very rare for records to have explicit sexual, violence, drug or alcohol references. (There were more subtle references though in things like Lucy in The Sky, Perfect Day, White Rabbit etc.)
It has been changing over many years - Smack My B1tch Up, Fck You Right Back, etc were hits over 10 years ago.
Now the majority of chart records will have some explicit lyrics- radio stations need to do lots of editing but the downloaded versions are explicit. . I could give loads of examples of crude lyrics, drug and sex references and references to women as 'b1tches.'
Can we stop the trend though? I doubt it. Does it really harm our children? I'm not sure.

When I was about 9, my mother dressed me up as Elvis Presley, for a family Christmas party. My aunts were horrified by that choice alone, and I knew the style of performance. Of course, I didn't know any more than that was he did; it had no suggestive or sexual meaning to me. And that, I suspect, is all that children who imitate adults understand.
I think music, whether audio or video has always been quite corrupting. It is everywhere. I can certainly remember asking my parents about lyrics from songs that i didn't understand and learnt more from that than the school playground. I think it's often way too graphic, but maybe I'm a bit of a prude:-\
