I’ve just bought a ticket through axs.com for an event at The O2. I couldn’t get what I considered a decent seat through any other ticket retailer.
Now I’m panicking, because I’ve never heard of axs!
Have I screwed up?

According to the link you posted, axs don't have very good customer service.
I'm more concerned about my ticket (if it arrives) being genuine and valid for the event.
