So now, we're getting to the 'fag end' of the year...so what do you think has defined 2013 as the 'news story of the year'?

For me, 2012 was defined by the Olympics -how well London coped, how well Team UK did and how awesome the opening and closing ceremonies were (Pet Shop Boys in pointy hats singing 'West End Girls' - yes please).

What news story (non-personal) has left the greatest impression on you from 2014?

Unfortunately for me - the year will be defined by Woolwich...the worst piece of news I've heard since 7/7...

But what's yours? What defined your year for you?

Syria?
The birth of Prince George?
Yewtree?
The horsemeat scandal?
Nigella?
Resignation of Pope Benedict XVI?
The Savar building collapse?
Prince Harry's Crown Jewels in Las Vegas?
Edward Snowden?
Tom Daley?

"the greatest impression on you from 2014" you're getting a bit ahead of yourself there sp1814.
//What news story (non-personal) has left the greatest impression on you from 2014? //

well for me, that's yet to come. 2013 has had lots of "moments" but nothing really defining. unless you count gays finally getting true equality.
I expect the biggest story of 2014 will be the announcement of the civil marriage (or whatever it's actually called) between anotheoldgit and sp1814.

Guh!

Of course I meant 2013.

I already know the biggest story from 2014...the fact that our alien overlords are going to make themselves known to us, enslave us, and feast on our souls..

...apparently, they're from Eastern Europe (Daily Mail joke...)

Only if you agree to be the pageboy.

2014 will be all about England fans working out all the statistical possibilities for England to remain in the world cup beyond the group stage.

Is that...a football thing???
Yew Tree will resound on for years, so sadly, perhaps that.....

The Pope resigning was pretty amazing.

Bank scandals, probably, and all that.
Tom Daley, "fag end" of the year, surely you jest?
//Is that...a football thing??? //
yes. and will doubtless result in baddiel, skinner and the lightning seeds lamenting about "forty eight years of hurt".
The death of Lee Rigby and the recent Ian Watkins story, both horrified me and left a not very nice impression of the past year.

I think the Snowden story was the most significant of the year - it's been swept under the carpet here by authorities and the public alike, but in the US, where they take personal freedoms more seriously, there's been a lot of anger. (It's badly tarnished my view of Obama.)

But I suspect the things I'll remember longest, for what you might call their entertainment value, are Nigella and horsemeat.
SP, I think everything on your list just got eclipsed.

Eh?

By what?

Is something happening that AB hasn't been informed about?

(Perhaps something along the lines of sp1814 correcting others' grammar, whilst ending a sentence on a preposition?)
The death of Nelson Mandela, I assume.
The recovery of the economy.
Edward Snowden gets my vote for "Most undeserving hero status" award certainly.
I'm assuming that some of the things on sp's list are tongue-in-cheek.
For me its a series of news items, with the same theme. Its the year that I think will go down in history when the British police lost its last remaining dignity and respect. From this year forward, when a Policeman gets up in court, with his little black notebook and shiny buttons, and gives evidence, juries will no longer accept what he says as the given truth.

And it can only get worse in 2014, when the Hillsborough affair comes up for scrutiny.
the tragedy at the clutha pub in Glasgow.
