What is there that has not already been done in music?
Or to put it another way: Is there a vacuum musically waiting to be filled, what does music need in the way of a new wave?

Genres are pretty much set now.
You need to play notes and chords in an order that nobody has yet covered.
Be creative and experiment.
It's the media that tends to give tags or genres to new music styles - i.e. garage, dub step, etc etc...
If the music is good - it will be noticed.
Music is like language in that it is constantly evolving. Genres aren't fixed. Rather they merge and develop into other things. That's why there is always so much debate about whether ABC band plays XYZ or 123 genre.

As to what the next big thing will be, who knows. Listeners will know it and follow it when they recognise/need it. My OH is currently in two bands playing forms of blues - one very upbeat and the other a very hard, raw, angry sound. Both are enjoying a modicum of success locally. That may be something to do with the economic climate. Whether it's the next big sound, we can't say.
I think it's almost certain someone somewhere was asking the same question maybe 70 years ago. I remember discussions on the radio about it 40 years ago where people were saying that surely almost all combinations of notes have been used and soon we'll run out of tunes. I have also heard there are so many combinations available we may have only just scratched the surface. I expect that same question will still be asked in 50 years from now
As much as I hate to say it, the last real innovation in music was probably rap music.

Everything else has just been a regurgitation or mixing of previous styles and genres for a while now.
